Criminal Investigations Division (CID)

The Criminal Investigations Division (CID) is tasked with conducting preliminary and follow-up investigations of crimes within the city limits of Demopolis. Whenever possible, members of the division also conduct proactive enforcement of state laws and local ordinances.

The Training & Development Division is committed to equipping officers with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to serve the community with sound judgment and effective tactics. The division is responsible for identifying high-quality training opportunities from across the country while also bringing professional training programs to the department’s facilities. In addition, the division strives to serve as a valuable training resource for surrounding law enforcement agencies by providing access to quality instruction and professional development opportunities.

Canine Unit

The Demopolis Police Department takes great pride in its Canine Unit and the proficiency and capabilities it provides. The unit responds to a high volume of specialized calls for service each year, ranging from public demonstrations at schools and local businesses to tracking dangerous armed suspects involved in crimes within Demopolis and neighboring communities.

The Canine Unit is frequently called upon to assist neighboring local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies through mutual aid agreements. Due to the City of Demopolis’ central location within Marengo County, which borders eight surrounding counties, the unit is strategically positioned to respond to a wide range of requests for service throughout the region.

Honor Guard

Established in 2010, the Demopolis Police and Fire Departments’ Honor Guard represents the departments at ceremonies and official events, including funerals for police officers, firefighters, and city officials throughout the community.

Officers selected for the Honor Guard wear distinctive uniforms and exemplify the professionalism, dignity, and respect that represent the Demopolis Police and Fire Departments. Since its establishment, the Honor Guard has participated in numerous funerals, memorial services, and ceremonial events throughout the state, honoring those who have served their communities with dedication and sacrifice.

Patrol Division

The Patrol Division is considered the backbone of the organization and is the largest division within the Demopolis Police Department. The division is responsible for providing a high standard of public safety and assistance 24 hours a day, ensuring the protection of the city and its residents.

Patrol officers provide a wide variety of law enforcement services, including responding to calls for service, writing reports, directing traffic, investigating traffic accidents, conducting preliminary criminal investigations, and providing security throughout the city.

Patrol officers also take on a variety of responsibilities during special events, including crowd control, assisting lost children and parents, conducting business walk-throughs, performing residential vacation checks, providing security for city court proceedings, supporting sporting events, working off-duty security assignments, and delivering drug and crime prevention presentations. These responsibilities are carried out through a variety of methods, including foot patrol, bike patrol, and the use of marked and unmarked patrol vehicles.

School Patrol Officer Program

The Demopolis Police Department established its School Patrol Officer Program in February 2009 to help provide a safer learning and working environment for students and teachers within the Demopolis School System. School Patrol Officers serve as positive role models while building strong relationships with students, faculty, staff, and parents. They also maintain a visible and active law enforcement presence within the school system, representing the department and promoting a safe, supportive educational environment.

To provide this service, a Demopolis Police Officer is assigned full-time to each school within the Demopolis City School System. The School Patrol Officer Program has proven to be a valuable resource for the four schools located in Demopolis.

Before being assigned to a school, each School Patrol Officer is required to complete a 40-hour School Patrol Officer Training program. This specialized training prepares officers to address issues such as school violence, gang activity, drug-related offenses, weapons violations, and child abuse. School Patrol Officers must also maintain a thorough understanding of juvenile law and its application within the juvenile justice system.

In addition to promoting school safety, School Patrol Officers investigate crimes involving students, teachers, and school employees. They also serve as a liaison between the Demopolis Police Department, the Demopolis City Board of Education, and school administrators on matters related to law enforcement activities and public safety within the school environment.

Special Response Team (SRT)

A new tradition of excellence has begun within the Demopolis Police Department with the establishment of an active Special Response Team (SRT). The team’s members are FBI SWAT-certified and receive specialized training to respond to high-risk situations. The SRT assists the Demopolis Police Department and neighboring law enforcement agencies with tactical operations and other critical incidents requiring specialized expertise.
