Message from the Chief

Welcome, and thank you for visiting the Demopolis Fire Rescue website. It is my great privilege and honor to serve as your Fire Chief. I have felt and witnessed firsthand, by working my way through the ranks, the honor that comes with wearing the Demopolis Fire Rescue uniform. As Fire Chief, I will continually evaluate our operations to ensure we consistently exceed the expectations of our community and the residents whom we are proud to serve.

We are highly trained professionals who respond to a variety of calls, from suppressing and extinguishing fires to handling emergency medical services, hazardous material response, vehicle extrication, rope rescue, disaster response, and other types of emergencies.

In addition, we also provide a variety of community-oriented training and services, including public safety education, CPR classes, and prevention programs. The department operates and staffs two fire stations. Resources include: 1 Truck Company, 2 Engine Companies, 1 Fire Boat, 1 Hazmat Unit, and 1 Battalion Chief on duty.

Administration is located at Fire Station 1, 306 Hwy 80 West, and is staffed by the Fire Chief, Administrative Assistant, Fire Inspector, and Training Officer.

Sincerely,
Greg Russell
Fire Chief

Yes. The Fire Rescue Department offers SCBA cylinder refills for the following fees:

  • Small cylinders: $3.00
  • Large cylinders: $5.00

The department reserves the right to refuse to refill any SCBA cylinder determined to be unsafe or hazardous.

SCBA Cylinder Hydrostatic Testing verifies the structural integrity and safety of an SCBA cylinder throughout its service life. The material of the SCBA cylinder (i.e., steel, aluminum, composite) dictates both the required frequency of testing and the overall service life of the cylinder.

  • Most SCBA cylinders require hydrostatic testing every three years.
  • Fully wrapped carbon fiber SCBA cylinders must also be tested every three years and have a 15-year service life from the date of manufacture stamped on the cylinder.

To help ensure safe operation, the department follows applicable U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) safety guidance.

These precautionary measures include:

  • Determine if the fire department has any cylinders made of aluminum alloy 6351-T6. For aid in determining whether a cylinder is made of aluminum alloy 6351-T6, contact the cylinder manufacturer or distributor.
  • Do not overfill a cylinder to greater than the marked service pressure.
  • Do not fill a cylinder that is beyond its required retest date.
  • Do not use a cylinder that is beyond its required retest date.
  • By May 1997, the interior of any cylinder made of aluminum alloy 6351-T6 should be inspected for cracks in the neck and shoulder area. Any evidence of a crack or crack-like defect may require further evaluation.

The department reserves the right to refuse to refill any SCBA cylinder determined to be unsafe or hazardous.
